How Best to Teach Your Dog to Come
Dogs do not come in the naturally stubborn category. However, it takes them some time to understand what needs to be done. That is why it is necessary that the owner manages to establish his status of “alpha wolf”, really quickly. To make sure that the dog understands the necessary behavior and commands, you need to be patient, and firm. This challenge is going to include the training of the important “come” command.
It’s in their nature for dogs to scout out their environment. They will sniff anything and everything, dig, turn things over, and grab little items. When doing a teaching session diminish any distractions by arranging to be as far away from other people and voices as possible. It’s a good idea to use an area that is clear of obstructions or a room without small objects on the floor.
Be sure to utilize any instinctive behavior you see. For instance when you observe the dog coming toward you, give a verbal command along with a hand gesture to encourage this behavior. Try to use a word and gesture that you don’t regularly use during your teaching sessions.
Start the session by putting your dog in a sitting position. Move back a number of steps while saying ’stay’ firmly, and using the hand gesture. Correct behavior should be praised lavishly, but do not reward incorrect and partial responses.
Keep repeating this, as you move back. If your dog comes towards you too quickly, use ’sit/stay’ commands again. If the dog does not move try coaxing with treats or toys.
Reluctant or slow learners might need collar training or leash training. Put the dog in the sit and stay position. Start moving away, letting the leash go slack. If the dog does not obey you, tug the leash gently with the appropriate hand and voice command.
For a dog that comes too early, use a long rope or tether and wrap it around a stake or a tree. If the dog begins to come too early pull the strap as you vocalize the “stay” command. If there are no trees available, use a friend to help with the session. The detrimental part about using an additional person during the session is the dog can become Thrown off about who they should obey. It’s usually best if they just focus on one teacher.
While instructing, steadfastness and determination is crucial. Dogs don’t automatically understand the reasoning behind ‘come’ or any other human-induced behavior. Speaking harshly when the dog messes up or is a little distracted is normally detrimental. Establish your leader status with tone of voice, body language and determination to wait for the dog to catch on. Physical punishment or leading is a less helpful method.
Dogs respond extremely quickly to praise when they execute proper behavior. You need to be resolute and make sure that they come when you order them to.
